Welcome to the Department of Oriental Studies, East Yangon University. Oriental Studies is unique in introducing students to cultures and civilizations. We teach and research the Languages, Literatures, Religions, Histories, Culture, Philosophy, Ethics, Politics, Arts and Architectures of Asia and South East Asia based on the Buddhist Studies. Basically it is to study Pâli, Sanskrit and Prakrit language and literature. The courses present both the major traditions of the regions studied and, in most cases, their modern developments. The Myanmar people have been long familiar with the teachings of the Buddha as early as the beginning of Myanmar history. The knowledge obtained from the Buddha's teachings and Pāli literature has helped promote the cultural life of the people from the Pyu, Pinya and Inwa periods down to the present day. This department has existed since the Yangon University was founded. In 1912; U Pe Maung Tin was a professor in Pāli Department at Rangoon College. In 1920, he also was a Pāli professor in Yangon University. The term “the Department of Oriental Studies” has been used since 1972.

Pali literature mainly consists of valuable guidelines for daily activities of the lay peoples as well as the religious discourses for the spiritual growth especially Abhidhamma. Therefore, those who study the Oriental Studies have to the golden opportunity to be able to study Languages, Culture, Myanmar traditions, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist concepts and Buddha's teaching on social activities. In this context, studying Oriental Studies is supported to be a very useful aid for daily living by providing the public with required knowledge for the uplift of public morale.
