Since 1999, When Thanlyin College was established, Sayamagyi Daw Nu Yee has been the first head of the Department of Oriental Studies.
Professors and Head in the Department of Oriental Studies in East Yangon University over the years have been:
Daw Nu Yee – Professor and Head (1999 – 2005)
Dr. Tin San Aye - Professor and Head (2005 – 2019)
Dr. Khin Myint Myint - Professor and Head (2019 -2022)

The Department of Oriental Studies Located at Thanlyin District. We offer Bachelor of Arts, Honours and Master of Arts Classes (Day and Distance Education Section) every year.
Our students observe the essence of Buddhism, its social aspects, Thinking, experience and practice and the rules and customs of religious communities. They are encouraged to practice what the learn in their social activities, Life, Sports, Reading and Playing. This department has a small Library with some rare books such as Sanskrit Texts, Visuddhi Magga Text and so on.

Future of Department
Future of department of Oriental Studies are to produce Qualified intellectuals and the good person teachers of the department useful to follow the Path of Righteousness in their daily life and are conducting research on our language and literature.
To provide basic Buddhism, not only for academic knowledge but also to help one to become a good person in daily life and useful to all who wish to follow the Path of Righteousness in their daily life. In the context of Oriental Studies, "vision" typically refers to the aspirations and goals of the field, often encompassing the development of morality and rationality, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the promotion of global understanding and interconnectedness.
Established in 1999, the Department of Oriental Studies at East Yangon University defines its mission as providing students with fundamental Knowledge of the religion of Buddhism, its social aspects, thinking, experience and practice and the rules and customs of religious communities.
