The Bachelor of Library and Information Studies (First Year) program was first launched at East Yangon University in June 2001. Initially, the program was taught part-time by faculty members from Yangon University, including: (1) Sayagyi U Thein Shwe, (2) Sayamagyi Daw Yin Yin Sein, (3) Sayagyi U Tun Aung Kyaw, (4) Sayamagyi Daw Htay Htay Win, (5) Sayamagyi Daw Khin Kyu, (6) Sayamagyi Daw Saw Mya Kyi Thar, and (7) Sayamagyi Daw Sein Sein Lwin.
In 2002, the Department of Library and Information Studies was officially established on the second floor of Building (1) at East Yangon University, with Professor U Thein Shwe serving as the head of the department.
In 2003, the department was relocated to the second and third floors of Building (4). In 2008, due to damage caused by Cyclone Nargis, the roof of the third floor of Building (4) was destroyed, forcing the department to move to the ground floor.
In 2013, the department was relocated to its current location in Building (4-106). At present, Dr. Saw Mya Kyi Thar serves as Professor and Head of the Department.

Library and Information Studies is a subject that provides information (or) knowledge through library science so that people can easily and quickly learn and use the information or knowledge that is growing every day.
The Department of Library and Information Studies is an advanced educational institution that systematically trains students and those interested in the subject to access the information, knowledge and wisdom they want easily and quickly. This department mainly trains students on how to organize and manage information systematically. How to retrieve and use information. These disciplines include:
- Collection Management
- Cataloging and Classification
- Information Systems and Technology
- Research Methods
- Information Literacy
- Preservation and Conservation
- Information Sources
- Statistics and
- Information Management.
The Department of Library and Information Studies provides advanced training in the selection, acquisition, organization, preservation, conservation, retrieval, and dissemination of documented information for post graduate students and librarians.
To be a leading center for library and information studies, promoting innovation, research, and lifelong learning to equip information professionals for the digital age.
